Glazed Chocolate Cake with Black Sesame Buttercream

A moist, tender cake full of chocolatey flavor!

I spent the weekend and eating so many different chocolate cakes. Making and testing recipes, toying around with ratios, all working towards the perfect chocolate cake.

I’ll be honest, cake is not my favorite dessert. It’s usually either too light, dry, or flavorless with a frosting that’s overwhelmingly sweet. But this cake is anything but that. It’s super moist, light but not too airy, and the frosting is smooth and sweet without giving you cavities.

Pear Fig Crumble Bars

Another fruit recipe. As you can tell, I really love fruit. Mangoes, blueberries, and now pears and figs.

Pears and figs go wondrously well together, and adding almonds to the equation just amps up the earthiness in these bars. I was originally planning on making them with a buttery shortbread crust, but that jar of almond butter was just calling for me. Best decision I made that day. And because of the switch, these bars are also dairy free!

You’ll love this recipe because it’s so nutty and also has a great earthy flavor from the figs. The crumble topping, the tender crunch of the pear, and the soft figs all just meld together in your mouth.

Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co.

2209 4th St

Seattle, WA, 98121

I ate several delicious cupcakes on my trip to Seattle, but my favorite cupcakes came from Yellow Leaf. These may be some of my favorite cupcakes I’ve ever gotten from a shop. I found it while I was wandering in downtown Seattle, a tiny single shop unlike the bigger names here (Cupcake Royale, Trophy Cupcakes).

Right when I walked in I was hit with the wonderful sweet aroma of baked goods. Then I was able to take in the appearance. This place was so cute! A small little store with a small selection of items ranging from macarons to coffee.

Iced Biscoff Latte

When I want something to cool me off and/or relax me, I don’t want ice cream. I want a refreshing drink. Sometimes it’s iced tea, other times a fruit infused water will do the trick. But this time around I wanted some coffee.

People usually drink coffee for one of two reasons: they actually like the coffee or they just want the caffeine. I’m one who just likes the flavor of coffee. Honestly, caffeinated drinks never seemed to affect me much. They never gave me energy or kept me up at night.

I don’t get coffee often but typically I just order something simple, like an Americano or a cappuccino. But guys, COOKIE BUTTER. I’m pretty sure all of you have had it. If not, you must buy yourself a jar now! Trader Joe sells them as Speculoos cookie butter and other places have a Biscoff European biscuit spread. Basically, they took these wonderful spiced biscuits and made them into a spread similar to peanut butter. But this is way better. Peanut butter is freaking amazing, but this stuff is even better.

30 Sinan Lu

Shanghai, China

I’ve heard good things about HoF, mainly about their chocolate desserts. As an avid chocolate lover, this was a must visit on my trip to Shanghai. They also have salads and sandwiches, suitable for a simple lunch, as well as a wide variety of alcoholic drinks.

Seven Layer Bar Ice Cream {no churn!}

A cool, creamy treat with a base that can be prepared in minutes! All you have to do afterwards is place it in the freezer, wait, and enjoy.

Ice cream is the quintessential summer treat, but I haven’t made any this summer yet. Until now, at least. You see, I never really made ice cream because I didn’t have an ice cream machine and I didn’t want to have to stir every thirty minutes, blah blah blah. Plus, the mixture always seemed to freeze up rock solid no matter what.

I received an ice cream machine as a gift last year, but I’ve always been too lazy to pull it out and use it. Solution? Make this no churn ice cream!

Carmel Bakery

Ocean Ave, between Dolores St and Lincoln St

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, 93921

As you walk down the street on your way to the beautiful beach, there’s a little bakery. While in Carmel, roaming the streets, I saw several people walk past me with cones of ice cream. I had to get some as well. Using my ice cream detecting skills, I found the Carmel Bakery. Besides their ice cream, their wide array of treats on their window display also lured me in.

This place seems to be crowded a lot and there are several people behind the counter assisting people, ensuring that the line moves fast. There’s not a whole lot of space inside to sit, but there are a few tables as well as some more set up outside.

Blueberry Pie Bars

I can’t believe it’s already August. Summer is going by so fast.

Produce has got to be my favorite thing about summer. I stocked up my fridge full of fresh fruits and vegetables that I normally don’t get a chance to eat. But sometimes, I get too much and scramble to make something to put all that produce in.

Enter these blueberry pie bars. Now, my absolute favorite way to eat fruit is fresh and raw, but you guys. A crumble topping makes EVERYTHING better. Not to mention these bars are gluten free, dairy free, and vegan! I also used low glycemic sweeteners. Suitable for those with and without allergies.
